So, on Monday we drove down to Cassis, a former and sometimes now small fishing village 20 kms east of Marseilles and about 190 kms south from our Provence base in Sablet. It is also on the road to Toulon, Nice, Monte Carlo and all of those other beautiful people places
On arrival in the town we spent the first hour driving around in circles, we had been forewarned by the guide books that parking was hard to come by and they weren't wrong . We eventually found a park but it was such a long long way to the port and back to the car was up very steep hills. It wasn't until we booked into our B&B that we got the gen on where to park, so when we went for dinner we only had a five minute walk to the recommended seafood restaurant. Dinner was one of our memorable meals in France.
The real highlight of this place for us has been the scenery again. The port itself is a gem. It has moored within its little harbour small commercial fishing boats, private yachts and cruisers and Calanques cruise boats.
It was too windy today for the Calanques cruise boats to leave port so we settled for exploring the town on foot, relieving some of the local stores of merchandise they thought they would be stuck with over the winter, a tourist "train" ride through the town and surrounds and to the top of a Calanque, a seafood lunch and a drive up to Cap Canaille, the highest seaside cliff in Europe with the most unbelievable views over Cassis, the Mediterranean and Côte d'Azur you could imagine.
It was blowing a gale up there at about 400 meters above the sea but we clung on to take some unforgettable shots and to live to tell another tale.

We watched this fellow preparing his boat and nets yesterday afternoon. Here he is selling the remainder of his catch this morning. |
